hello  my 59 has the factory 223 milage maker 6.  she clatters like a old  prostitute with false teeth !!!!! question?  does she need a outside oiler?, a  :005: valve lash (if solid lifters)
i did a cold lash check there right at 19,000

anybody have any suggestions?

I believe it is solid lifters. As far as outside oiler, you may need one now? After the car has/had miles on it. But originally my answer would be no. It was designed without one. Wouldn't hurt to put one on. Do the google for the fordsix website.. I was on there when I was going to build my "large log" 300 for my rat rod.

oh, sorry, I thought you had a fair amount of miles. 19,000 make me think you had more than 7,000. I couldn't tell what your meaning

yes book calls for .019 cold valve lash

The 223 has the exact same mushroom lifters as the Y block V8, .019 should be correct for lash. Just pull the valve cover and run with it off to check for proper oiling. It ain't ever going to be quite, but should just have a slight tap.

hi glen  i did run it with the valve cover off. it gets more oil in the front than the back of the rocker arm.   i bought a outside oiler for her  yet to install it. i have been plagued with many other issues of this car sitting for over 35 years

i had a feeing they were not hydraulic lifters

thank you for your imput it is greatly welcome and appreciated... to all of you guy's! :001:

One issue with the 223 and Y block, is if the rockers are worn and you try too adjust them with a feeler gauge, they will be too loose. If you remove the rocker shaft and look at the rocker face, you will see why. The rocker face will have a circle worn in it the size of the valve stem. The fix is to have the rockers resurfaced or replace them. Not alot of shops have the proper fixture for resurfacing the rocker tips anymore, but Rocker Arm Specialist (google them) car rebuild them for you @ a reasonable price. Also NOS ones show up on Ebay sometimes. If the rockers are oiling, I don't think the external oiler will be of any benifit.
