Well my dad can't find the title, so I only have the car and a texas title transfer form. I'm 27 and I know you've got to have a car title or motorcycle title before bringing anything home. Except I brought the car home, from his house becasue the local fuzz was coming by his house since it was parked in the front driveway. My question is what do I do? He went to the dmv to get a new title or file for a lost title, and they couldn't find the vin. The car has texas plates, and he had parking tickets that were outstanding, but since the computers and electronic databases they have thrown out his paperwork and file. The VIN isn't long enough, there's simply no record that the car ever existed, let alone was registered to the Junior in texas, I'm the third _ same name.

What's next? I broke my leg, so I'm unable to walk, but when I can I want to get a move on this car, and pick up a trans am until I can ride motorcycles again. Currently the car has the engine and trans out, and needs brake lines. The custom 300 four door has been in the family since 57 but no record now. It's all stock, all original, and everything is there. I just need the 312 hot tanked and a AOD behind it, with some fresh new tires and new springs. Throws some fresh paint on there and vinyl the interior, I could make a daily driver out of it. BUT THE TITLE! how can you lose the title!

Here in AL 74 and earlier had no title.  Registration and Tag only.  We have a form (DMV provides) that is used to verify the VIN, must be done at the DMV OR have any cop come by the house to verify.  They must have some kind of proceedure to facilitate getting a new title?

I heard in Texas that theres a bonded title procedure, I think it's going to cost me over a grand to do it. Then I think it's three years or something until I get thetitle. I think I might sell the motor for some trans am money

TN has the same thing, bonded.  Simple, didn't cost me but 50 for my 36 Chevy and the trouble finding three people from TN to sign the paper work when you are living in VA Beach!

Try to find an old registration card in the car, most states cards have a title number on them.
Take a tracing of the VIN number, it's 10 digits long. Proves it is a real # and car.
Texas may have a gift form that your grandpa can sign over the car to you. Most states do.
Don't matter how old the car is there are records  (it can't be the only 57 Ford in Texas, too short a serial # is B/S if you have it correct! Take the tracing!)

My dad went to the office in Austin, they can't cross reference the vin, the car simply doesn't exist despite having plates on it right now from 82.

you need the vin #. tags/registration drop out of the system after a set amount of years. think it was 10 years.

you might also want to consider just getting the form and submitting it. sounds like filing the correct form might get 'er done, be easier than going into the office in person, and looks like the fee is $2. particular forms might cost more, I haven't looked, but I'd be surprised if you come close to a grand.

just looked... form VTR-34 looks to be the correct form. it is specifically for replacing lost titles. will cost you $2.
