Column shift lever install

Help....I removed my column shift lever years ago when I installed a T5. Now put a C6 in and want to go back to the column shift. Lever is held in with a roll pin, but that spring in there,,,,,kinda of an issue. How do I get the shift lever back in behind that spring? Steering wheel/column need to be removed/taken apart? Any help appreciated. I have a 58 Courier Sedan Delivery,,,,it has 57 back end/tail lights.
