Tailgate handle gasket, Ranchero or station wagon

I resolved the tailgate handle gasket problem by making a gasket for my station wagon's tailgate handle.  I bought a 36" strip of 1/8" thick EPDM rubber with an adhesive on one side from Grainger's.  The item number is 1MYJ6.

If anybody needs any details or questions answered, I'll be glad to help.  The handle fits and looks totally "factory" with this gasket, and it was pretty easy too make.

Excellent job! I used self adhesive rubber strip & it was a nightmare job to keep it in place.

I have a local place called Lubbock Gasket that can make gaskets.  They have water jets and machines that cut stuff out with precision, and have all types of materials.  I may take a seal there and see if they can die-cut some.

If they can do it, and the price is not "ugly", I'd take 3 or 4.

I'll run a seal by and see what they can do.   I don't think cost will be a factor.   They are always reasonable when I've had stuff made.

I took a sample of an original gasket and handle to Lubbock Gasket.   They are going to see what one looks like cut out with the water jet.  They should have very straight lines and smooth corners  The only issue I see, is that they cannot bevel the edge like the original.  That would take a 5 axis machine to do bevel cuts around corners.  These may make a nice looking solution for most.

Still, having an injection mold made for at least the outer section would make the most accurate reproduction.

I'll let you know what these look like when finished.
