Fly wheel not parallel to block-HELP

Need your help with this one? I put the flywheel on the crank so I could check some clearance issues with starter and headers when I noticed there's a 3/8 difference from side to side between the flywheel and block and some difference from top to bottom as well, couldn't get a good measurement on the top to bottom but doesn't seem as bad, what the heck is going on? I had this engine done at a shop but the only thing I can think of is they didn't line bore it or they did and didn't do it right. Please give me your thoughts, the flywheel seems to lay fairly flat and a straight edge across it seems to confirm it's straight!!

Thanks in advance

Lou

Did you rotate the flywheel and crank, and do the clearence issues stay the same?

I think it's the flywheel, if I measure at the crank to the block each side with a straight edge without the flywheel on it's very close. The flywheel sure seems ok though when you set it on a flat suface? Must be the bolt holes?

The flange on the crank, or the back of the flywheel may have been machined crooked.  Put a straight edge on the crank flange and measure to the block, it you can put a straight edge on the back side of the crank flange too. If this checks out, it's got to be the flywheel.

john, first question that come to my mind is , are we talking stick flywheel or flex plate for an automatic??
if we're talking used automatic flex plate i'd say it's bent, comman problem stick type flywheel i's say burs or dirt between the crank flange and flywheel , highly unlikely a bent crank.
to get an accurate messurement you have to use machined surfaces not to a cast surface. just my thoughts

It was the flexplate, I have it running parallel now just needed a little help from the old rubber mallet!!
