Parking Brake Cable Spring

My parking brake cable has a small spring on each side where it enters into the drums, The springs are hooked to the U bolts on leaf springs and then to the cables. These were on the car when I got it and I'm not sure if they were installed at the factory to keep the cables from hanging on the grommets or if previous owner installed them.
 Can anyone tell me if their parking brake cable has these please?

What you describe does not sound like the factory installation.  I took a picture of my parking brake cable.  From the bracket on the frame to where the cable goes into the brake backing plate the parking brake cable sheath is protected by wire wound around the sheath.
