transmission paint

I'm about to replace the standard transmission in my wifes country sedan with an overdrive. I plan to paint the case once I have the  overdrive back together and ready to install. Black would work, but if they were painted it would be nice to use the original color. Were transmissions painted and if so what color?

For some strange reason I always painted mine too. But I have never seen one from the factory with paint.

I painted the 3-speed od a dark grey, looks good in there.
