insulating hood

also,   i saw on one of the hot rod programs,  a way to insulate the inside of the hood,  it covers all the holes or the actual hood material,  not the hood support frame,  it looks silver and then covedred with some black material,  anyone know what i'm talking about?,  if u know about it, send me some info,  thanks    jerry

Why would you want to keep the heat in the engine compartment?

Is hood insulation unusual? or a bad idea? It seems like most (newer) cars I've owned have had it.

61 - 66 Birds have it, a heavy glass type.  It don't keep any heat in, just reduces the amount of noise and helps protect the paint ever so slightly.  Newer cars have it in everyone I have looked at.  Those with composit hood also have a screen mesh in them to keep RF noise down.

It is used to keep engine noise down, as far as keeping heat in, the engine is below the hood, heat raises, remember louvered hoods.
