Just finished cleaning, bending the shift arm, and making new bushings for my Hurst Comp Plus shifter. It's handy having an old computer in my shop- lets me find out stuff I forgot like shift linkage orientation. Below are links for taking the shifter apart and a David Kee catalog with pics.

Just unbelievable how a gear-missing, locking-up crappie shifter will respond to a good cleaning, new rod bushings, spring clips and proper adjustment.

From your pictures it looks like a Mustang toploader.
The shifter location will probably be too far rearward to use in a 57.
Generally you need a 64-68 Galaxie toploader tailhousing and output shaft (at least) because the shifter mounts just behind the main case.
Also a 61-64 Galaxie T-10 is a drop in. A friend did that swap in a 59 Ranchero about 50 yrs ago.

Goodluck,

Ron.

Yeah it is 65 Galaxie type, does shift better now so it wasn't a waste of time. I used the blue tipped wrench to adjust the stick angle, because it's a welded in stick, so I don't reach for third as much. Downside is I bought another stick of the bolt-on type at a Boxing Day sale, saw the signs that said all sales final so I asked the counter guy if I could exchange it if I was guessing wrong and he said sure!
Well, I took it back and was told with a look of "you stupid old fart" "didn't you see the signs? I mentioned the other guy and was told come back Saturday when he works -which doesn't do me much good when I live out of town. Ate another 75 bucks.

I noticed in the second picture the top cover looks like studs and nuts rather then bolts, never seen that on a top cover before?? I have a top loader 4spd I was thinking about putting in mine but decided to wait and see if I can find and OD trans...

Whoops, OK sorry. Those pics were just off the web for linkage layout, not my trans.
