Figured it was ok to post this here. 1960 Plymouth Fury convertible I am reassembling for a customer. I can't wait to fire this engine . Just shows how crazy stuff got in the late 50's early 60's . It's called a "Sonoramic" intake .

That looks just plain mad!  What was the logic for that design?

To make torque and eye appeal I guess. They found in later years that the shorter cross rams worked better for horsepower. As I have read the long manifolds made a ton of torque at 2800 rpm. Because of that you could get this set up in heavy convertibles and station wagons.

The logic is tuning the length of the intake runners to match the timing of the pulses. It is the same logic used in equal length headers just on the intake side. It can provide a slight amount of reduced vacuum at a specific rpm improving horsepower. Chrysler used this design on their 413 engines in 59 through 62 (if I remember right). It was called "Ram Induction" and is mentioned in a Beach Boy song "Shut Down".

I heard from Jeff yesterday.   He said that he is working on his deuce.  At least that's what he wants me to believe.   He sure is keeping a low profile.

Here in Pennsylvania the boys used to call that intake "the spaghetti ram." I've watched many of those engines compete at local drag strips, and they were just awesome.
