Emergency brake cable. (again)

Hi guys. How long is the return spring on the axle end of the rear e brake cable? The part of the cable between the backing plate and the operating lever that has the spring wound over it, is bent almost double and touching the flange on the half shaft. Its frustrating as im almost starting from scratch on the e brake as there wasn't anything installed in the car and parts are missing.

The best I can tell is that the spring you are referring to is part of a replacement cable assembly from looking at the shop manual and the Concours Parts catalog. I vaguely remember removing these cables in my ebrake project a while back just to make sure the cables were free..
