Replating tail gate handle

I know that someone has had their tailgate latch handle re -chromed.    My question is did you have it done without separating the 2 halves? I can't see disassembly without ruining the union of the 2 pieces. The joining of the 2 halves look to be meant to never come apart.I have a pile of these latches, and they are all needing redone.
