Ford Blue blood

Yes, tubes do provide an added safety factor.  A friend here in Birmingham found a 51 Mercury that had been in a shed for almost all of it's life.  22K miles on it, tires were original to the car and held air when pumped up.  They were full of cracks and looked really bad but they rolled and held air for the six months it took him to clean, de-critter, re-lube and get started.  His father has the car and it is as original as found today but with new bias ply tires

Bert Monroe still holds the record (or did for many years until just recently) for the class he competed in at Bonneville.  The Worlds Fastest Indian is a great movie!  Almost 100% accurate in the depiction of events and his efforts.

X2 on The Worlds Fastest Indian being a great movie.  My favorite part was his shrine to the "Gods of Speed".  It was a shelf with all of the race parts broken during his pursuit of the Bonneville record.  You have to be a racer to understand the addiction.
