272 rebuild to 292

Is there a difference between a 272 and 292 from 1957? Beside the bore? There is a local one for sale out of a truck (57) that I may get. If I do what needs to be done to get it up to 292 specs?

The main difference is the bore. I'm not sure what cylinder heads they used on the 272 truck engines? If they are not G heads and if you are not looking for the best performance the truck heads will work fine. Other difference would be the cross over exhaust manifolds used on trucks, you can't use those or wouldn't want to. Truck motors mounted at the front off of the timing chain cover, that can be removed and the block should be drilled for side mounts.

Update, the engine I am thinking of getting is a 61 292 with a standard 3 spd. for a tranny. IF I can get the price down enough I may get it and sell off the tranny as I need an auto. Looks like the only thing that needs replacing are the exh. manifolds and carb. I have a year to play with it before it needs to go into the car.

Mike, imho, a 61 292 is one of the more desirable Y blocks. They are said to have good quality castings, they are already setup for PCV system. you need to see what heads are on that truck motor. often the og truck heads ( less performance) have been replaced with the ECZ-G ( 1956 & 57 'thunderbird special' engine specs) or '113' designation heads. same specs. large valves and relatively hi comp. you will especially want to check the og cam and valve lift on each valve.

If it is a truck engine the 61 heads are small valve, low compression. I'm not sure if the 61 trucks still used a rear sump oil pan?

Well, I ended up passing on the 61 truck engine. Something else is in the works and I hope to pick it up on thursday.
