c4 swap to 272 yblock

Hi Guys, A friend of mine wants me to install a 1967 C4 trans in his 55 ford. I read somewhere inn here  you can drill some other holes in bell housing to mate up to a Yblock and use the  C4 torque converter. Is that true? I'm told there are kits also out there but very expensive. I have another friend who has a 1968 302 and C4 complete for $800.00. I think this would be a cheaper way to go. Am I wrong. He just wants a dependale driver

The re-drilling exercise is for an FMX transmission, not a C-4.  The C-4 would require an adapter kit.   John

The 302 will sit right in using 64 Galaxie 289 motor mounts.  To get pan clearance I had to use a 1/2 inch spacer between the mount and the motor and a 3/16 spacer between the mount and the frame pad.  I see no reason that a thicker piece couldn't be used between the mount and the motor.

As Terry mentioned, the small block will fit with minimal effort.  Prior to the Cleveland, I had a 351 Windsor in my 58.  The 351 is just a little wider than the 302.  I used 69 Fairlane long tube headers, but I know a lot of the guys have used stock manifolds with 302 swaps.

Just a little more info. My friend said this is just a driver car. 2 door post with a 3 speed manuel. He will be turning 80 this year. He would like to get away from the manuel because his clutch leg is not as strong as it use to be. I am looking to do this as cheaply as I can for him. He has been a devoted Ford guy his whole life, Just getting to old to do it himself. From what I read this is a fairly expensive deal. {Parts} Thank you for the replys I have received so far.

FOM would be the cheapest way out.  Any transmission would likely need to be rebuilt.  Another option might be to install a hydraulic clutch to ease the leg stress.

I got into one of these situations.  A friend's grandpa in-law (ya' it was a ways out there) wanted to drive a '58 Fairlane clone of his high school car.  I was asked to help locate some parts due to the similarities between '57 and '58.  I supplied a few parts.  The guy was suffering Parkinson's disease.  Unfortunately, the Parkinson's effects worsened faster than the car could be readied.  To help make the care easier to drive, the wife wanted power steering upgrade.  Before PS was located and installed, she wanted power brake upgrade.  Before PB was installed, the wife wanted automatic transmission upgrade.  Unfortunately, Parkinson's was faster than the mechanics.  He did get to drive his high school Fairlane but the family wouldn't allow license plates so he drive it around the fields of his farm.
