Padded dash glue

I've just had to take off my padded dash as it was, reluctantly, unrepairable. Now my problem is how do I get the 50+year old glue off without having to sand? I've tried thinners ,solvent, and Sem Solve, The paint looks good so I'd like to save it. Any ideas?

Hi.

I used the 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner Part# 08984. Comes in quart cans. I used gallons of this over the years in the RV biz and is great on almost everything. Auto parts stores, home centers should stock this. Hope this helps.
