I want to switch from generater to alternater and understand I need a different bracket for the switch.  I have the 312 y block.  Where can I find one.

Hey Z, go to www.speedwaymotors.com/Y-block-Ford-Alternator-Bracket, They have them for $99.00 and they look good, I made my own but I can't find the web sight that showed how, must be part of getting old!!

"Z" unless you are running a heavy electrical load or want it for the "look" there is not much to be gained switching to a alternator. A generater can be rebuilt in about 30 mins for about $15.00. Because of the radio in Police and Taxicabs Ford offered a alternator option in their fleet sales catalogs since 1953.

I agree with Lou....the generator will handle everything a 57 can hand it and then some!  They are far more reliable then an alternator ever thought about being and cost nothing to rebuild.  The regulator is readily available everywhere.

A couple of years ago I bought an 292 engine from Bud kolar. It had an alternator on it. I removed it and the brackets and replaced them with a generator. If you would like it for a very reasonable price, let me know. I will take some pics of what I have so you can see it.

if it would work on my 312 I would be intersested.  Thanks

Speedway also offers a modernized Generator look alike called a Powergen.
The Ford version will fit 51-59 Fords and has an output of 75 amps max and 60 amps at idle.
They are a one wire hookup.  The down side is they are horrifically too expensive $419.00.
Save yourself some serious bucks and go with a Generator, you yellow pages should list a bunch of shops that can rebuild one to put out whatever amperage you need.

I will try to get over to where it is and take pics in a day or two.  Send your email address to jwag41@yahoo.com so I can send them to you.

If they fit a 292 they will fit a 312.

I bought a bracket kit for a y-block from vintage air for about 100$. It mounts a 508 sanden compressor, and a GM alternator. I got the compressor from Summit for about 200$, and the one wire alternator (chrome) for 104$ I'll post a picture when I get the swap on the car, I saw on a y-blocks post that I need a rear discharge compressor, so I might have to exchange it.  Mark

Did it have the rectifier pack with it?  The early altenators had external rectifiers  It was a big ugly finned looking affair thaqt sat on top of the altenator itself.

Mark I assumed it was an early Ford unit that was an option back then.....slow brain cells didn't translate that it could be a late model......
