Great day so far, traded some future louver work for the cowl piece, arms etc... from a 58. Still need a 59-61 wiper motor so if anyone has a lead I'm still hunting. He's parting out a 58 Fairlane 500 more door type so if anyone is looking for say a steering box or whatever I can forward his contact info.

GREAT DAY!

Almost forgot will soon have a contact number for a guy that has the rear floor shelf piece I need for my business coupe, like I said a great day.

I've done this swap on a 58 Edsel and the wiper motor I used was a marine wiper motor. They have two speeds, adjustable sweep, adjustable park and they sweep back and forth
not 360 degrees. The brand I used is Ongaro, which has a huge selection. The only problem I had was the cardboard ducting.

rmk57, do you remember model number, so far comparing price direct for ongaro one was $189- and from an online dealer a very reasonable $79-, guess I won't be buying direct if I go with ongaro.

Zap- :unitedstates:

found TRICO website this morning, requested model # and dealer info for a new motor that will work as a replacement for a 59-61 lets see what they recommend.

finding that most of the manufacturer sites list model numbers and you're supposed to know what you need, but Trico does have a contact us email spot for average joes seeking specific product information.

Sorry, I dont have the part #, it was 5-6 years ago when I did the swap but I do remember using the short shaft I think it was 1.5 inches. Gotta go hockeys on....

Tried the trico site and for my use they were pretty worthless, Ongaro however did send me a jpeg file that gave specs for motors meant to be direct drive for single wipers, which means a back and forth motion, And that got me thinking about all those thousands of rear window wipers found on suv, vans, etc... There has to one out there with similar sweep angle. Then just minutes ago wandered into a new site (for me). www.Instructables.com .  And low and behold there is a how-to by a guy who adapted one off a cherokee onto an early jeep to get rid of his vacuum wipers. So maybe there is a truly simple and lobuck answer using oem parts.

Are there any multiple speed rear wipers out there?

Have all the parts now, the 58 cowl pieces and arms were a surprising easy find, then was contacted by Oris Hove out of South Dakota he had the early factory electric wiper motors, switches and cable. Will check it all out but its nice to gather another piece of the puzzle. And will be done with all OEM parts and very little money.

I'm using a motor & rack & pinions from a 60's Morris.  These were common in MG's, Jaguar's, Austins & a whole load of English cars from the 50's to the 80's.  They're quite compact, can be twin speed/self parking and the rack & tubes can be cut down to any size.

Limey, that was a common option pushed by the magazines in the 70/80s. a neat alternative specially since the motor could be mounted far away and since it basicly uses speedometer cables for drives one was never limited by the original design. There was some trick to plumbing the lines so that you could have opposing wipers as our 57s have, believe it was simply driving it from the opposite side. I thought of using that kind of set-up till I found a way using Ford parts, plus having had several British cars in my early years I have nothing good to say about anything labeled Lucas, now if said Bosch I'd reconsider.

All you have to do is remove one of the wheel-boxes & flip it over.

I hear you on the reliability, British built cars were beyond a joke regarding reliability up to the 90's.  Nowadays the "British makes" are all foriegn owned anyway, but the British unrelibility still creeps in now & again.

limey...that sure is a whole lot simpler than what I went thru fabing a complete wiper arm assembly starting with a '97 Mustang setup (long story).
Zap....not to change the subject, but in rereading the earlier posts in this thread, you talked about getting a contact number for a guy who had the business coupe rear package shelf....anything ever happen with that?
Also, a local yard here has a '58 he'll cut the cowl area out of, but wants 150. for it...as much work as it would be to graft it onto the '57 cowl, I personally would just do it from scratch. I've got a rather poor pic of it if anybody wants to see what the '58 cowl wiper motor area looks like.

I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

I'm still waiting for that contact information. I would think that $150- is a bit steep for that small piece of sheetmetal. I traded some future louver work for my piece along with the arms, wiper posts and arms heating duct and the outer cowl vent piece.

The 150. was because of where the car was in the yard and the number of cars they'd have to move to get to it so they could bring it to their shop area where they do the cutting. If I had portable cutting equipt I could probably get the piece for 20.

These are similar

Like SPW as seen http://www.specialtypowerwindows.com/products.php?c=2&t=13 and http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SPECIALTY-POWER-WINDOWS-WIPER-DRIVE-KIT-HOT-ROD-RAT-ROD-/310114860739

Its a snap wiper kit http://www.hotrodhotline.com/pr/2010/010itsasnapfeb/

http://www.hotrodssuperstore.com/winwipkit.html

These systems are very similar to the ones made by Lucas/BMC and seen in MGs Morris, Triumphs etc.
