Got my oil filter conversion kit in the mail today and had a bit of a time figuring out how it was to go on. I took the old adapter plate and fitting out of the block and then put the gasket in the block and installed the new adapter plate and adapter nut into the block. It seemed to mate up nice to the block and gasket, so I tightened it up very tight and put on the new spin on filter. Cranked it up and pumped out around a quart of oil on the floor in 30 seconds or so. It must be leaking at the big gasket big time. Didn't have any more time today to fool with it. Anyone run into the same problem? I searched online and a guy also had the same problem. He even posted pictures asking questions He didn't get much help. Any advice would be appreciated. I will be back at it tomorrow.  Don

I bought it new from Obsolete and Classic auto parts in Oklahoma. I called the guy today and he said he has sold thousands of them since he has been there since 1994, and no problems that he knows of. I searched online today and there are plenty of posts on forums with guys having the same problem as mine. One guy said he eliminated the leak by gooping both sides of the gasket with a sealer. I just might try double gasketing it tomorrow, as the old canister gasket would act as a double. If it don't work out I can always go back to the canister and put a new filter in it. Hate to though. Thanks for your reply.

How come they never know that something is wrong and never had a complaint?

Don try looking at the Y-block site.  This is not the first time this issue has occured and they can surely help you figure out what went wrong.  I have "over tightening" in the back of my mind from previous readings.

I've always used the stock Ford parts from another motor and have never tried an after market one. What filter did you use? Do the after market one require a different one then the standard Fram PH8A type?

Well I have spent a day and a half on the junky conversion kit and had to abandon it. No matter what I did or tried it still leaked at the gasket. I double gasketed it, used the permatex orange, and nothing worked. I dare say I have never have seen such a piece of crap. I threw it in the back and will be using my old canister with a new filter on Monday. Can't see an over tightening as a cause, and if you would inspect this thing I think you would agree. Yes the conversion does use the PH 8A or the Ford FL1-A, and various other brands. I tried using two different brand filters just to make sure it wasn't a filter issue. Well at least I have the rear main seal leak fixed. Last week I dropped the pan and installed the Victor brand rubber seal kit, and that stopped the really bad leak at the rear main. I was thrilled that the upper rope style half came right out, and I got the upper half on in about fifteen minutes time. I am not fond of the steel pins used to wedge the side seals, but no leaks, so all is well. Thanks everyone for your input. Next week also will be working on putting door and vent glass in with new channels. By the way a couple weeks ago I converted the V8 to the Petronix ignition, along with the hot flame thrower coil. I thought it was going to blast into space when I fired her up. What a difference. I has dual glass packs and it startled me when first firing up.

Just out of curiosity why did you have to change the filter adapter, an older engine? By 57 they all had spin on filters the best I know.

Mine was leaking when I got my car running. I ordered one from a guy on Ebay. Out of Wisconsin. Came with the wrong nut, so I basically paid $ for a gasket. But no leaks! I was very diligent to clean the gasket surface area real well.

All the 57 Fords had the canister type filter when they were built. I worked in a Ford garage when I was fifteen years old back in 1959 and my job was to change oil etc. Changed many canister type on the 57's and it was a pain. I cocked the canister on one of them and pumped a quart or two all over the floor. Bet I am giving my age away. Ha!

Something wrong with this kit. I was very careful with cleaning. This kit cost $20.00 plus shipping. Pure junk.

Thats interesting, I've never seen a 57 with one. I know my 57 223 even had a spin on and I bought it from the original owner in 1966. And all my other 57's had spin on's.

Just before I bought my Ranchero I scrapped out 2900lbs of parts and there was probably six of the adapter plates and nuts. Wish I had known..

cluster...not to change the subject, but I noted you said you were going to work on channels and wing windows next week. I just wanted to give you a heads up I'm getting ready to do a door assembly thread with lots of pics. That's what I've been working on for the past 2 days.
