Cable Wiper Question.

I have a Newport and a very good NOS vacuum set up... aside from that debate.. my question is.... how tight should the cables be?
Mine were frozen when I got the car... I have been hitting the joints with fluid film and now can turn freely .... with the aid of a set of grips.
Still can't turn them by hand..... should I be able to?

I would not recommend taking hem apart. If you can get them to turn, by lubing, and getting them to finally turn, they should work fine. The vacuum motors don't work very good. An electric like one of a '55-'57 chebie bolts right on and looks vintage. They are on ebay all the time.

I guess my question is how free should they turn Pat,....finger ease... or should there be some resistance?
I have no notion of taking that cable system apart...... ha ha

Jeff I could not turn the wipers on my Ranch wagon by hand but the 60 Ford wiper motor I put on ran them just fine. I had used WD40 to get them loose and lock cylinder lube to keep them loose. Never had a good vacuum motor to test them with.

Mine take about 1-2 pounds pull on the wiper arm. That's with the old vacumn unit which doesn't work anymore anyway.

There's a small section in the service manual for R&R wiper linkage. I did it...once. You can get access to all lube points without removing the assemblies. If you attempt to remove one part, it all has to come out. I found the most maintenance needed was to free up the main shaft right behind the motor.

Gary..... and I think that is where the problem(my problem) lies....I will lube as many of the wheels as possible.....

Keep soaking with WD40 (or like product) and move from time to time. A little tight is better than loose.

Gary.got it moving...good resistance but can turn it with my hand now...Just as you said... lubed for the last 3-4 day periodically and all is good.

Mine turn nice and easy by hand now. I keep them lubricated.
There were a couple frayed cables and a rotted out cable tension assembly. I replaced them with some good pieces that I took out of a donor car. They can be very confusing, so don't take them apart unless you really have to. I'm glad that you got them freed up.

Somebody at one time posted on this forumn that the shop manual has an incorrect diagram of the assembly. Wish I could remember more.

Rich I just took a look in the shop manual and it is kinda vague. Back when I did mine, someone gave me a nice illustration and it was more easy to follow than the shop manual. I wonder what I did with it. I'm sure that I saved it somewhere.
