Heater Box?

Morning Sirs,

Well I'm officially 57, only difference I feel is I get a little colder... Which leads me to a heater question. When I look under the dash I can see the heater core and the shroud that surrounds it, allong with what looks like 1/4" bolt holes on the perimeter. For the life of me I can't find the part that should cover this area to enable me to redirect the air to the defrost. I'm thinking it's called a heater "box" cover but I can't find any reference to it on this site or any of the dealers (Mac's, Dearborn, etc.). I haven't had a chance to see anyone else's 57 yet to see what they had stock. I just need the name of the part to help with my search.

On another note, the old girl is running like a dream. New carb, plugs, wires, rotor & cap, and a little timing adjustment and it's running like a sewing machine. Heck I even took it to a local car show and won "Best Antique" and a free Dyno. We set her up and I thought it was gonna launch itself off the ramp! 105 HP w/ 180 Torque at 3500, got it up to 118 MPH. Don't get in unless you want to go fast is what I told the wife...heh heh  :burnout:

The rest of the plans are coming together, have received all of the parts for a front suspension and steering rebuild. Thinking on buying a two post hoist, has anyone ever parked another car under a two poster? Told my daughter she could park in the garage this winter if she didn't mind a few oil drips  :001:

Anyway have a good day Fella's, enjoy the sunshine.

And there it is... That thing is huge... Thanks Blue ! All I need to do now is find one before the snow flies. If anyone happens to have an old one of these that won't be used, I'd be willing to pay a good dollar for it. I believe I have everything else.

I am in the process of replacing all the heater parts on my Ranchero, Most of all the small parts are avaliable from different vendors but youll have to source all the major steel parts. The box that mounts to the inside of the firewall and houses the heater core on my car had rusted out holes in both bottom corners. luckly the previous owner had already sourced one and it was laying in the bed when i bought the car. I am just taking my time, removing all the surface rust, painting everything new gaskets vaccume lines and oiling all the original cables.
I have a rust hole in my passanger side inner fender well, It's 58 years old what do you expect?

Lucky'57

Thanks VW, I'll definately have to go that route as well. Cables are awfull tight...

Lowe's has a Teflon lube that works very well.  First use some rust buster to clean the cables, rinse with alcohol and then lube.  Did wonders on my Edsel heater control system.

Just keep in mind when you're looking for heater components that Ford used 2different units...completly different. You have what appears to be the factory installed heater from the engine bay pic you posted. Many others have a dealer installed heater, which is completly different...it does not have the big box like plenum your looking for.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

Lucky'57

Good to know Rich. I noticed that there were two motor placements on the photos I've been looking at of different 57's. Some with the fan motor sticking out the front and some sideways (like mine). So mine is factory installed. I'll start hunting one down, if nothing else I can probably rig something up temporarily that would get my hot air redirected to the defrost. Thanks for the heads up.

You should get in touch with Randy Connor on our site.  He has a  lot of 57 Fords that he parts out.    Explain to him what you have.  Jay

Which part on the diagram do you need, I might have one.

Contibob

Your car was originally equipped with the factory installed Air Conditioning. That's what those vents up on the windshield/dash trim is. The side mounted fan plenum on the firewall also indicates factory A/C. Bob

The inside heater-A/C box is different than the two previously mentioned. Bob

Thanks for the info Contibob. I wasn't aware that the factory air had any bearing on the type of plenum I needed. Good to know.

57chero - Thanks, I'll have to get back to you when I find out if we have the right diagram, given the air con issue. I thought it was FEG-18458-B (or D) but let me do a little more digging to narrow it down.

Not sure if it makes any difference but I had no plans on re-installing the air con compressor. It was all removed by the PO and needs to be rebuilt.

Well it looks like I might be on the right track. I found this schematic in Jerry's Classic Cars catalog. That lower cover (19828) is what I'm looking for, but I think I might as well pull the whole unit and do the rebuild one piece at a time. I don't know how long the core has been dry either so best to do it all in one shot. Nice little project for winter. Thanks to everybody for the valued input and setting me straight.

EVERY piece of the SelectAire system is different than a factory heater.
It would be easier to swap in a complete factory heater than find parts for the a/c system.
I have an factory A/C car if you have any questions.
Goodluck,
Ron.
