Looks like an early overdrive to me.  At first I thought I might be a t85, but loooking at the side cover, I'm more inclined to think it's an earlier trans, maybe a 54-56 model.  Not sure of the model designation....

Agreed, not a T85 which has a rounded bottom side cover and R11 OD unit. Thats an R10 model OD. I think the early ones ( 6V ) didn't have the solenoid marked for voltage, the 56 and later had 12V stamped in the solenoid cover the best I remember.

After enlarging the picture I see the rectangular cover with two bolts on the top of the tail shaft that is for access to a snap ring, those were mostly on 52-54, after that the access was a round hole with a freeze type plug. It's considered a light duty trans, the medium duty had a top cover.

Rebuilt dozens of them in my youth.....LOL!   Easy to knock a tooth off the sliding gear.

Used to buy em for $10-15 at the local junkyards and piece together spares.

49-56 std duty/R10,  57-62 had the longer tailhousing and some had fine spline inputs.

I'd believe the junkyard paint "51ford"

Ron.

That trans is worth some $$$ today to early Ford guys especially if the solenoid is good. I've seen the solenoids alone sell between $250-300  :002:

I was wondering what that two bolt plate was for.
