I have used heim joints on my linkage (we call them "rose" joints or rod-end bearings over here), linked together with a shaped length of 5/16" UNF threaded rod which allows for accurate adjustment.  I will try removing the rubber bush in the end of the column shifter leaver and replace it with an aluminum bush and see how it works.

Years ago I changed out the rubber for PVC bushing.  Worked great on the FordOMatic.  Got rid of a lot of slop.
