question about gas pedal area on front floor

How does the oem gas pedal attach to the floorboard? And where? Does anybody have pictures?
both of my 57s have either rotted out or replaced/cut before and the patch panels don't seem to give me much info about where the gas pedal should go.

Hopefully some of the guys with oem setups can give you some exact info, but when I did mine, also on replaced floorboards,I had the gas pedal linkage in place, so I just moved the bottom of the pedal around to where it felt comfortable for me. I've had some dd where my foot would get tired/sore on a long trip, but that hasn't been an issue with the '57, so I guess my methodology worked.
When I tore the car apart, the gas pedal was no longer attached to the floor...rotted away. The '63 pedal I used did not have a hinge, and I don't know if the oem setup utilized one. Certainly none of the repops I've seen have had a hinge, so I'm guessing the "hinge" was just the rubber flap. I actually made a hinge from a section of a large HD gate hinge. My padding under the carpet was 3/8 thick, so the hinge is actually burried in a hole I cut thru the carpet and padding. The hinge can't be seen. I got pics if you want to go other than oem.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

I seem to remember all my 57s, and current 59 2 door sedan, as having the gas pedal attatched to the floor with 2 bolts. As mentioned, the pedal did not have an actual hinge, it was just bolted thru the flat rubber flap, that works like a strap hinge. On my 59, I am thinking of replacing the factory gas pedal with a hanging pedal and cable, like those used on many late 60s thru 80s Fords.

That's something on my to do list while my front rug is out.  My plan is to do something like what Rich did.  I'm going to hook up the pedal to the linkage and move it around to a comfortable spot and drill two holes in the floor  through the rubber flap type hinge.
Also.... Check your computer because your email  came back undeliverable yesterday.

Zap....   I'll be waiting to see what you come up with for a picture before I drill the  holes.

Thx Zap for the manual pics. From what I see it seems the pedal is just attached with 2 hex head metal screws, is that correct?
I'd appreciate a pic of that area taken of a original unmolested car.

Jay, this is what Zap sent me.
Rich's method sounds reasonable enough. if anybody had some measurements or pattern from an og car, I'd prefer to have this as accurate as I can get it. If I can ever get ahold of an og rubber flooring or mat I want the gas pedal to exactly be where it was supposed to.

Before I drill the holes in the floor, I'm going to put the rubber mat back in place because it came with a hole for the gas pedal if you remember.   I did run the car for a while with the pedal just sticking out of the  hole and it lined up pretty good.  Just never got around to drilling the two holes in the floor for the gas pedal flap.   Jay

For what it's worth. Back in 2008 when I had every piece of metal (it seemed like) replaced on my 57, I decided to go with a 1966 Fairlane gas pedal. The bolt and spring worked just fine and it looked goo. Been using it like that for 8 years and no problems. Beats drilling holes in the floor and cutting carpet.

My Del Rio has a 68/70ish Mustang hanging pedal setup with cable. sure works nicely. it's just that in the Country Sedan I want the original rubber pedal for its neat looks and to keep the car original mechanical wise. I might want to take the car back to rubber flooring later on possibly.
The CS is quite a survivor. I will update my build thread with pics soon.

The pedal is held to the floor with 1/4" hex head (7/16) sheet metal screws, they are about 1/2-3/4"  long. I just aligned the pedal with the linkage in the middle, squared it up making sure I had adequate travel. I wound up using 1/4" nuts and bolts instead of the screws though. (My floor had been replaced with flat plate).

that's some great info, Lynn. thx, just going out looking in my 57 hardware collection what I can come up with.

Pedal uses the same screws as the voltage regulater, power window relay, starter relay etc.

Just went through this a week ago on my car.  I found the best is to put in accelerator linkage and ensure it lines up with pedal throughout stroke.  The service manual also gives a dimension as to how high the pedal should be.  I did this with the mat in to verify the position is correct as the mat has a slot in it for the pedal.  It would be tough to give a measurement for the holes as all of the sheet metal is curved.  The holes when you are done should be inside of the half circles in floor plan that are apparently put there so the screws do not go through two layers of metal.

Gunther, check your email.

Have to admit this and a whole lot of other things is why I will be using a "Speed King" drum pedal. Lol

Great info, everybody. Zap, the parts list does say #14x 3/4 which translates into a 1/4" OD metal screw.
Ray, I checked my regulator and starter solenoid and they sure have the same size and length hex head metal screws !
#14x3/4 - 3/8hex
@Lynn. you might be wrong with the wrench size since all those screws mentioned on the car and also in my parts and hardware collection, #14screws (1/4"OD) all seem to have a 3/8 head.
Randy, I do not have any original metal left in that area and the EMS panels do not have any cutouts in them. since you mentioned the screws would go through 2 layers of sheetmetal it must be in the overlap of the toeboards and the front floors.
If anybody could come up with a measurement starting at the front edge of the floorboards we could pretty much exactly say where the pedal goes. Probably difficult to find the front edge, since it is covered with factory body sealer.
