This is local..... the price is right.
Pretty sure it's not a 57 or 58....  I have a feeling it's a truck unit.The gentleman selling states its a 3:25 Posi unit.
I have looked through some sites on ford 9 inch ID.... most are confusing.

Anybody care to guess?

The 2 dimples has me thinking a galaxy or mustang... but I thought most early mustangs had tapered axle housings...

My 70 Boss 302 was a straight tube as your picture shows.  Just don't remember if it had the dimples....that was a couple of days ago when I last saw it (1980).

Ha ha...funny Bill.

If anything..I could use the 3rd member alone.....but not even sure if its big bearing, little bearing ....28 spline or 31...car or truck....
I guess I need to get wheel surface to wheel surface measurements and bolt pattern.

Not something I recognize but not a 57-58. Start with the wheel bolt pattern, 5x5 for most trucks, cars are 5 x 4 1/2. Trucks will have an off center pinion location between the backing plates and equal length axles, cars have a centered pinion because of the drive shaft tunnel and unequal length axles..

IMO...not a pickup rear because the spring perch is on the bottom.  Just a guess but it looks wide, not likely a Mustang, Comet, Fairlane.  '64 was the last year for leaf springs in Galaxie.  Very few 9s in Mustangs until GTs, Machs, Shelbys, big block.  31 spline axles came out in '62 or '63 427 cars and they were with Detroit Lockers.  The end of the axles have two drill holes or one large cast-in divot for 31 or 28 spline axles.  Width would help ID.  There are several decode charts based on the width.

Sellers always tell you a Yblock is a 312, a FE is 390 or 428, and a 9 is a posi.  I can come really close on the gear ratio from the outside but it has to rotate.  The same with Traction Lok, you must be able to see the inside or rotate it to confirm limited slip.  The 3.25 ratio was common in the late '60s muscle, four speed cars.  Detroit Lockers are very rare and Traction Locs few and far between.  Usually the only ones I find picking are pickup rears.  One caution, if it is limited slip and really old, there were Equal Locs.  Very rare!!  Tough to rebuild clutches...different than Traction Loc clutches.

If you're spending much over a 100 bucks, buyer beware.  If you're paying more than a $100 with no proof, I got a pile I sell you for less than $100 each and I won't lie to you.  There are no posi, Traction Loc, or Detroit Lockers in the bunch.

Thanks Gary... very helpful
I just spoke with the gentleman and all he could tell me it came out of an old Ford Panel wagon and he did not know the production car.
He said the width was 61 inches from wheel surface to surface..... the spring mounts were 43 from bolt mount to mount.
The bolt pattern was late Ford(4.50)
I asked if he could pull an axle and he said he would to get back to me.

Thanks to all for the info!

Like Gary said, the perches are for a passenger car, I missed that. I don't know what he is calling a Panel Wagon. Panel trucks ended in 1960 and only 57-60 had 9" rears. They also have a 5 x 5 wheel. The brakes were narrow shoes and that rear has wide drums..

OK, sorry I misunderstood the origin.

The missing 50+ year old tin tag was the only positive ID of where the tag originated.  Even if the tag was present, who knows if the tag belongs to that rear AND the rear was not molested.  Turn the yoke and if the drums are free, both will rotate in the same direction IF it is Traction Loc or Detroit Locker and load it up quickly.  If the drums turn in opposite direction, no posi.  If both drums are froze up (will not turn), it's anybody's guess.
