Ford Mustang Mach 1 Prototype 1965

The prototype was designed at the Ford Design Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Ford Division's experimental 1968 Mustang Mach I has many design features of the production Mustang and Font GT competition vehicles. The front end of the Mach I has a recessed grille, and rectangular headlights set horizontally in the fenders. A twin-louvered hood and 64-degree windshield angle accentuate the ricing' look of the car. Air intakes in the body just behind the doors provide extra cooling to the rear brakes. Wheel openings are flared to accept special wide-oval, low-profile racing tires mounted on cast aluminum alloy wheels; side marker lights are mounted on the front and rear fenders. Mustang Mach I was designed at the Ford Design Center in Dearborn, Mich.

Mach I was a Mustang fastback prototype with an extended front clip, functional air intakes, and a competition-type ducktail spoiler. Ford's 427 V-8 engine powered the aluminum honeycomb panel chassis. The stock top was chopped, and the windshield angled back a rakish 64 degrees. Quick release filler caps were on roof pillars behind the fixed side glass. The hydraulics from inside the car opened the back glass and deck lid.

Nothing nicer than an old CJ Mustang stocker......It was parked in the sportsman pits at the finals at Pomona.

Don Keens 68 Mustang Stocker actually started life as a J code (302 4 barrel) car, but Don and his father have been running the car with a 428 CJ and 4 speed for at least 35 years. Don also races a 65 Mustang fastback 289 in Super Stock, and not sure if he has sold it yet, but also ran a 69 Mustang fastback in Stock with a 428 CJ 4 speed. Don was the NHRA World Champion with this 68 Mustang in 1990.
1959 Meteor 2 door sedan , 428 Cobra Jet 4 speed. Been drag racing Fords (mostly FEs) 47 years and counting.
Previous 50s Fords include 57 Custom 4 door, 2 57 Ford Sedan Deliveries, 59  Country Sedan, and as a 9 year old, fell in love with the family 58 2 door Ranch Wagon.

Funny thing is when we arrived at the track on Sunday morning with a truck and camper they mistakenly parked us in the sportsman pits. I wasn't complaining and meet some nice racers.

One thing I'll remember is trying to get out of the Fairplex on Monday morning. We stayed overnight and wanted to get an early start to head back home but all the exit gates were locked shut. There were a few top fuel / funny car teams driving around aimlessly with us in trying to find a way out of this damn place. We talked to one of the track staff in the morning and he said the LAPD locks everything up in the evening. Eventually we were directed to gate 17 to be on our merry way.

RICH MUISE

My first factory muscle car was a 67 cougar GT. One weekend, my next door neighbor, a mechanic by trade, in Huntington Beach was making fun of me for taking so long to change spark plugs. I finally gave up and asked him for help. "Sure, I'll be right over, have never worked on a GT." Never heard so many cuss words in all my life. He finally told me he'd have to lift the engine up somewhat to get the back plugs out.
I always thought the Cougars were a much prettier car than Mustangs, and if you think finding a Mustang GT was hard, Cougar GTs are almost non-existant. I did see a Cougar GTE at a show one time. The owner told me it was one of only 4 made. It had a 428 if I remember correctly.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

I think there were around 40 428 CJ GTE's built in 1968. April or May when the changeover from the single 4-bbl 427. 350 or so 427's were built? There was a dark green 428 CJ GTE at the old time drags in August I was attending. Still had the white window ET numbers on the windshield/side glass from the late 60's. The owner was really working on preserving a time capsule like this.

Randy,
Blue was the colour.  Here is how Kim found the car, 18,000 miles on it, original owner.  It put it back together and went back to Powell River to take him for a ride before he passed.  He also got a pile of memorabilia, trophies that the car won, photos, etc.
He did get the Langley Loafers Pick trophy at the Old Time Drags.

Terry, you would probably know, did George Black Motors sell Fords as well as Mercury products? The reason that I ask, is when I bought my first 57 Ford, a green Sedan Delivery (For our American members, these cars wore "Sedan Delivery" emblems on the front fenders, they were not called Couriers in Canada), in 1974,for 50 bucks :003: , it had a faded "Black Motors, Burnaby" sticker on the rear liftgate. I am guessing that Black was out of business by 1974, as although I was familiar with other area Ford new car dealerships, like Fogg, Dave Buck, Dominion Motors, Musgrove, as well as the Lincoln Mercury dealers (Zephyr LM, Totem LM, Maclellan Motors, etc, but not Black. Maybe my Sedan Delivery was sold there as a used car, if they didn`t sell Ford vehicles, just wondering.
