I was driving my 57 home on the highway yesterday afternoon and all of a sudden I hear a belt screaming. I pulls over and shut it down. I pop the hood and take a look but don't see much of anything and really can't touch much because the engine's a 170*+ and I'm in the 80* heat, so I start it up and can see the fan turning in small increments. I walk to the passenger side of the car and see my generator is seized and I shut it down.
I forgot to mention that a few minutes earlier I heard a noise from under the car that sounded like a stone had been kicked up and bounced under the car. Well...further examination showed a shiny new SS bolt laying on top of my generator that landed in one of the vent slots and I assume had shorted it out. I cut the belt and drove it back to my shop hoping the wind through the radiator would help me complete my journey. I made it back but, the temp made it to 230* and started coming out the overflow, I'm hoping it is ok. I got it on the lift and pulled the generator out. Further examination should a bunch of shiny copper in the vent ports so it blew up the armature and so what appears to be a fairly new generator is toast.  bawl

I went to the shop this morning while the little woman was still in bed and  I tore the generator apart today, freakin' junk, armature and fields had a little melt down...

Not sure if the Voltage Regulator crapped out and the bolt was a coincidence but I ordered a regulator and remanned generator, hope to have it Wednesday. The regulator looks to be original. :crybaby2:

What happened Joe ??  Haven't seen such a mess in 20 years !!! Must have shortened out. it's toast. What a pity looked great with the og FoMoCo label on it. Do Macs or C&Gs have new coils?

djfordmanjack

They both want you to ship them yours to be rebuilt with a 14 day turnaround for $235 plus shipping or an additional $95 core charge.

I picked this reman up on E-pay w/ 30 day warranty for $200 delivered. Hope to have it Thursday. Also bought a voltage regulator frm C&G.

It looks like you have been starting off the summer with more than your share of bad luck.  Hopefully you
will have all of that behind you now. Jay

CobraJoe

Hopefully Jay. My dad always said, if it's got wheels, tits or propellers; it's gonna give you grief and cost you money.  :003:

That said, the car is running good and hope to get to Halifax this Friday.

check the springs that hold tension on the brushes.  I don't know what happened to the quality of those, but once the generator was replaced by the alternator in cars, the quality of the parts for the generator seemed to go downhill.  I found that those springs will break with very few miles.

I know they are expensive, but I put a powergen alternator that looks like the generator.  I LOVE it.  I got the two terminal version so that It would turn off the dash light.  I also wired it using the original harness and ran it through the voltage regulator.  I had to cut some of the connections inside to make it work properly, but it works, looks stock and I never have a charging problem.

Halifax is a long way  (Hyannis??). My grandfather was from Halifax, btw.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

CobraJoe

Rich, not sure if you are confused with Halifax, Nova Scotia vs Halifax, Massachusetts. Hyannis is about 35 minutes from as is Halifax, Ma. Halifax, Nova scotia on the other hand is about 12 hours.

Cokefirst, the springs for the brushes seemed ok and the brushes looked fairly new. The voltage regulator on the hand, looked original to the car. I replaced it; hopefully it was the problem...time will tell.

Rich
I'm just about 12 -15 miles from Halifax , Mass.   Every Friday night in the summer they have a huge car cruise with usually 400 450 cars.  The first week that Joe went they had over 500 cars.  Joe would probably remember the exact amount.

Joe
We finished installing the new electric service in the house plus a special hook up for an auxiliary gas generator.  So now that's all done and I plan to go to the  Halifax cruise this Friday.   Believe it or not the weather liars are actually saying that we will not have rain.  I'll be looking for you.  I'll have my lookout guys watching for you like last time.

CobraJoe

Looks like I should be free, hope to see you there.

Oh yeah, I believe you told me the count was 570.

CobraJoe, I bought a starter from the same vendor, check it out carefully before you install. The starter I got worked well but both the front bushing and the rear bearing was bad. That cost me a Bendix.
