Miami Florida area...

I have a buddy who is looking at a '66 Galaxie 500 convertible in the Miami area. Lately he is getting the feeling that things are a little off balance. The car looks great, but some of the terms for the sale and shipping bother him.
I told him he needs to verify the car and it's condition before agreeing to anything. We are not real sure that this guy is even the owner...or is really going to sell.
So...are there any members here near Miami who can either go and scope this out for me, or who can recommend a solid quality appraiser? I'd appreciate the assist.
Thanks....Hugh

Just what are the terms for the sale and transport of this vehicle? This sounds like a con job is trying to be run on your friend.

I am suspicious as well.He is a bit too. He is not a neophyte exactly..his dad was a Model A restorer fr years and was friends with Harold Lemay who was a major car collector in the Tacoma WA area (LeMay museum is next to the Tacoma Museum)

I will p/m you some of the communication.

I'v always said if you can't touch it, see it drive it or get a good look at it don't buy it. Pictures have a way of lying in a big way. After all the years of preaching this I bought a 65 Falcon that I had only seen in pictures.  It turned out ok but I really got bet in the A-- to start with.  so buyer beware.

I agree for the most part. But...I do know that guys I have known for years have bought cars long distance. And the way they do it without getting burned is to hire a licensed appraiser to check out the potential purchase. Never had any of them get hurt that did that.
That is what I am going to have him do. Having someone else look at it before hand to see if it is really for sale and worth having an appraiser look at it would be nice too.

I'm retired now but have been a licenced appraiser for 40 years, and couldn't agree more.  I have to ask, what is so special about this 66 Ford that he couldn't fine something equal on the west coast?

RICH MUISE

Ditto what Lou said. Florida is high humidity/salty air state. A look underneath is an absolute must.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

I am not sure what is so special about this one other than the price. The pics looked really good. It is priced at $9800. He says that it had belonged to his dad, but now he has it with no place to keep it. But he hasn't sent Rob any pics of it with the top up...which is a little bothersome although at that price Rob isn;t all that concerned...i have a really excellent guy in Olympia that does show car quality work, I have seen his work on early 30's cars including Lincolns and Caddies as well as one Packard. And he put the top on my Saleen back i '03 and it is still good.

There are several pics of the undercarriage in the set that he sent to Rob. I can share the e-mail if there is someone available to look at the car to confirm it's availability and that everything is on the up and up...or if someone can make a recommendation of an appraiser in the area that can do that.

I will ask him if he has found anything on the west coast...

65 thru 67's have a major frame rail rust problem in the straight channels running from front to rear.

Bought a 67 back in the 80's with original paint, no body rust at all but, the frame rails were about 1/2 gone to rust. Good thing the 390/C-6 was worth the $300 I paid.

I had experience with 57-64's and that 67 scared me off any more of those 4 wheel coil spring Fords.

Good luck,

Ron.

So...just to wrap this up...my buddy decided that he was being played and moved on and back to the hunt. He also passed his suspicions on to the owner of the website he located the car on.
He asked me to convey his appreciation for the efforts we all put forth...kind of helped him make his decision to move on. Thanks all!
