Supercharger question

Does anyone know why some of the S/C cars air cleaners were punched with a number of holes and some were not?

Running change for better performance? Certain models? T-Bird or pass car?

This is one question I've never heard asked or answered.

Want to take it off my bucket list!

That was discussed, I think here. Sorry, I can't remember for sure but I think it was early vs. later systems, and I think I remember the discussion talked about 2 different suppliers/manufacturers. PM suede57, I'll bet he knows as he rebuilds them.

The air cleaners on the Phase 1 cars do not have the large holes.  I have been told that there was a concern about not having enough airflow in these so the production air cleaners were produced with the large holes.

Phase one cars (early production, most on Jan. 25, 1957) did not have the additional holes. Many other things were different on those cars. The blower was a case and cover arrangement. Phase two cars (the Majority) were equal halves. If I can find some pix not in storage I will post. Also phase one blower parts (brackets etc) all had xe part numbers. Phase two had more traditional Ford part or engineering numbers. very small numbers of phase one vehicles were produced, in the case of T-birds, 13 phase one cars vs 201 or 202 phase two cars (I personally have 197 serial numbers on T-birds).

You would think pulling air from the cowl area would be better than hot under hood air.
Those air cleaners are probably near impossible to find today.
