Jim, to the best of my knowledge it has something to do with plasticisers, the softening agent contained in rubber and plastic. either those have been changed or reduced for environmental or economical reason. I personally do not understand the logic behind that. if something only lasts for a fraction of the time it used to, it is no use to call it environmental friendly. If we need 5 sets of engine mounts in 20 years, instead of 1 good one. the production, shipment, replacement and disposal of 5 sets will definitely make it worse than keeping one good set for an extended period. This is some stuff that clearly sets our thinking apart from today's world. I just love good quality things that will last a long time. they make sense to me.

My question just out of curiosity is the quality of the rubber regardless of were they are made.. Nothing made of rubber today seems to last very long. I can't even find decent rubber caps for the vacuum ports on my Holley carb, lucky to get a year out of them..

X2  :003: and G is probably right, many of the chemicals that use to be used have been banned and replaced with tofu and soy sauce  :005:

I think John hit the nail on the head...........all this racing stuff, built up engines, trannies, rears..........but for the most part, we use motor mounts made for stock applications because nothing else is available.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

let us know what you end up with.  I may buy a few spares of some quality ones.

Parts makers are in it to make money, they also have to abide by rule sets, environment, wear testing.  But only have to meet the min. reqs.

So if the part is made cheaper, its one of two things, need cheaper cost or have to have certain materials for rules.

Rubber can be made high quality but it would not make sense, because then you would lose that customer, right?

Inferior materials are cheaper too.

Place of manufacture has nothing to do with the quality in most cases, its what the specs the OEM  Company building the part requests and pays for.  Then passes it off to us as "good enough"

One thing you can guarantee, is to not expect much from brand names anymore.  There are places in the States that will Revulcanize the rubber on odd broken mounts, but the price time and effort would be higher one-off custom USA prices.

I have worked for several different "internationally owned" companies during my pre-retirement working career.  One thing I learned, the U.S. importer sets the quality standard based on the "price point" they want to meet.  They can spec any item quality they want, but must pay accordingly .  Unfortunately, the product managers usually buy the cheapest manufactured item offshore and then price it at the higher quality sourced part they are replacing.  It's been called resourcing, and is completely profit driven.  I spent 30 years in wholesale sales/distribution in the bicycle and motorcycle industries.  The sourcing and quality parts problem with our rotten rubber motor mounts is wide spread across many different industries today.

Thats it in a nut shell. Thanks John. I'm trying to remember :old: but I think the mounts I bought to replace the Anchor were made in Mexico..

Well, I've been rather busy, plus I got a new computer and a new phone, which required this old dog to learn a few new tricks regarding photos and getting them downloaded and posted. My grandson showed me how to do it!

But here is the motor mount update. I purchased the mounts from Amazon, and as you can see in the photos below there is a Left and a Right, thus separate part numbers. And the sticker on the box says they are U.S.A made. Although I will not be "launching at 5,000 RPM's" I liked the idea of putting a bolt through the driver side mount and there are photos below.

I'll get the motor back in next week.

Carbon black is an important strengthening additive for rubber, but it adds cost.  For example, cheaper tires might have a 30,000 mile rating and costlier tires might be 60,000 mile rating.  This is primarily due to carbon black content.  I suspect that the motor mounts manufactured offshore probably have a reduced carbon black content which reduces the tensile strength.  Prior to retiring earlier this year my employer had issues with elastomer products from India because they had a carbon black shortage due to import restrictions.

Thats interesting info for me, I'm no chemist. I always thought it was added for color DUH!!

Yes it adds the color, but it also improves tensile strength depending on concentration.  Similar to alloying elements in steel.
