Clear weatherstripping adhesive

Me and my son have been replacing some of the weatherstripping on my small fleet of classic Ford vehicles.  We have been using the 3M black weatherstripping adhesive and no matter how careful we try to be, we seem to get some of the adhesive on the painted area around the weatherstripping.  I have used acetone but I am worried about damaging the paint.  I see that some recommend using bug and tar remover as it is not supposed to damage paint.

On a second note, I was looking for the adhesive in larger tubes (Auto Zone sells the 1 oz tube without the funnel nose and it is a mess to use) and I found that Permatex has a clear weatherstripping adhesive.  Has anyone tried it?  It is less messy than the 3M black or yellow adhesive?

Thanks

I used the black, but I applied masking tape to mask off areas I didn't want excess adhesive smeared. after applying, I removed the tape before attaching the seals. Worked out pretty well with really minimal stuff to clean up afterwards. I always use 3m adhesive remover for just about everything.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

If using the Black Weatherstrip Adhesive wipe off the squeezed out Adhesive with the General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner #08987. If used before excess adhesive is dry it removes it quickly and shouldn't hurt cured paint.

If you are looking for something clear the Plastic and Emblem Adhesive #08061 may work for certain areas.  It's not as easy on fresh paint, but should still clean up with the aerosol adhesive cleaner.

Most people use the black or yellow adhesive or contact adhesive(like for counter tops) and clean up with the adhesive cleaner.

It is best to clean the bonding surface of the new weatherstrip with the adhesive cleaner to remove any of the mold release off the weatherstrip.

Many use and acid brush to apply the adhesive to both surface and let adhesive on both surfaces tack a few minutes to reduce cleanup as well.

the product I am talking about is Permatex weatherstrip cement, product #80328.  It is clear and dries translucent.  I am curious if anyone has tried this?

I have used a product called "Kent Ultra clear" it works very well. Jt drys clear, and  cleans up without a mess. I get it from a body shop friend. I never have used the permatex brand.

Apparently it has been discontinued by the manufacturer.
