Hi all!
Finely have my 292 rebuilt, it is 060 over with a mild Clay Smith cam. Going to a 4 bbl from the stock 2 bbl and wondering what would be the best Carb for it?
Thank you for any suggestions.

I assume you are going to use a 57 wide base cast iron intake manifold. New AL manifold are out there. 500-700 dollars. Stock looking would carbs holley and AFB. I don't know if ford used (autolite 2100 guessing)in 57. 500-600 cfm range.

I replaced the original Holley 4-barrel carb in my 1957 with the 312 engine 3 years ago with a new Holley "Street Avenger" 600 CFM carburetor with manual choke.  My only reason for the replacement was that the original carb was in need of rebuild and the automatic choke was problematic.  The new carburetor worked almost flawlessly right out of the box and has been great ever since.  Your rebuilt engine would be just over 300 CI after the .060 bore, so I would think that carburetor would work for you as well.  I see that the latest Holley 600 CFM street carbs are listed as "Street Warrior" but probably very similar.  This carb also has a port for PCV hose connection which I would recommend as part of your engine build.

Good Luck,

I've been looking at carbs lately as well since I'm planning to install a new one on my Y-block when I'm done building it. So far I'm leaning towards the Summit brand carbs, which are similar to the old Autolite 4100's. Quite a few Y-block guys have been very happy with them.
Here's a link to the Y-blocksforever forum page where there is a recent discussion on carb selection:

Over the last 20 years on my SBF engines I've ran 600 CFM Edelbrachs and Holly carbs, they would work but 600 seemed too large and I always had unspent fuel odor out the exhaust especially on my 57, I talked to Edelbrach and Holly tech support and tried multiple adjustment and jets but never got them lean enough to be comfortable with, Someone on this forum recommended a Summit 500 CFM. I was hesitant to go to a smaller CFM, but I did and continued to have a rich burn, Summit tech support made some recommendations and had me install a power valve based on my vaccuum reading. I changed out the power valve and it took care of my problem. The car can set for a month and I have no issues with starting up within a few rotations and it's very resposive, no hesitation thru all power ranges. The carb looks like a Holly and may be made by Holly but the tech support at Summit was much better than Edelbrach and Holly tech support. I've had the Summit for about 5 years now and couldn't be happier. I know now I could have changed the power valve on the Holly, not sure about the Edelbrachs but could not believe tech support from both, never made that recommendation.  I am ignorant other than idle and choke adjustments when it involves a carburetor. Thats my 2 cents based on my experiences. I wish you well with your research and decision.
