changing the steering column in a 57 ford

ive got a tilt telescopic column out of my one owner 35k actual mile caddy coupe deville 1977 model,was thinking on installing it maybe use a alum engine rod to anchor it,or sumpn as good store bought or home made,any body ever try this?,probably change out the steering gearbox to a cp or sumpn else also to get the power steering we all want,any pros?or any cons? to this swap.
