I have a switch that came with my Ranchero. I assume it is the neutral safety and backup switch. I don't know where it goes or how it is connected. There are 4 terminals in it and a weird slotted actuator on the front. The terminals are M, L, H, AND B.
M has a #3 on it
H has a #1 on it
B has a #2 on it

The switch is constructed similar to the heater hi low switch.
Please help.
Thank you

Maybe 57 Fords are different, but that doesn`t look anything at all like the neutral safety switch from my 59. On the 59s, the neutral safety is a round, plastic unit, with a pair of screw holes 180 degrees apart, and it mounts to the bottom of the shift tube, between the steering box and firewall.

is it a manual or automatic the switch would be on the engine bays side, on the column above the gearbox, the arm from the shifter tube would have something that hits the pivot to indicate the position.
on the regular switch its more like a round can. you can use this to add reverse lights and  ignition cutoff for a NSS.

I don't believe that is a 57 item.  The NSW mounted on the steering column, closed in neutral only, was a round metal "can".  Four connections for NSW and reverse.  Manual cars with reverse switch was pretty much the same but with only two connections, if the few remaining brain cells I have are remembering correctly!
