312 dual pipes ?

Here is a question I could not find an answer .....
Did factory 312 cars come with dual exhaust pipes in 1957 or was that an option still, like on 292s ?

I guess the EDB manifolds were both suitable for single and dual pipes, because of the crossover tube running behind the engine and under car ? NO?

I believe that all 312 engines in 1957 came with dual exhaust and 292 engines came with 2 barrel carburetors and single exhaust.  I did try to do a search to confirm this, but was not able to find documentation.  The 312 engines came with multiple options on horsepower and carburetion:

D Code:  245 HP, single 4 barrel carb.
E Code:  270 HP, dual 4 barrel carbs (Wikipedia states that a 280 HP unit was available to Nascar with 2 4-barrel carbs and racing cam.)
F Code:  300 HP, Supercharged.

As you suggested, the 292 engines with the rear crossover were fairly easy to convert to dual exhaust and nearly all of the cars I have seen with these engines have dual exhausts.

I found this quote on the Ford Barn Forum. It corresponds with what I remember in the early 60's. The Model Fairlane car I have show rear resonators spaced wide outside the frame rails. The 292 single exhaust was just inside the spring.

" To answer the original question, all factory 312 full size cars had dual exhaust tailpipes were right at the edge of rear fenders. 292'shad single exhaust Tailpipe was about a foot or so inside the rear fender. When dual exhaust were added to a 292 the tailpipes were much closer together than the 312 making it easy to identify a 312 unless someone installed 312 tailpipes on a 292. 312 valve covers said Thunderbird Special. 292 said Thunderbird. 272's, 292's, and 312's all had ECZG heads, the same cam and rocker arms."

Thank you guys for the info!  It sounds logical and goes along with my assumptions.

I know the rear resonators from the parts book. I can also confirm that the og 292 in my CS wagon has a crossover and single pipe, that runs inside the drivers side rear spring and next to the tank. It looks like an awkward set up, but never causes any problem at all.

Now thinking about the resonator dual set up on the 312 Fairlane cars. it may very well have had a distinct exhaust note on purpose, to go with and increase the trim level value.

Reason for my question, is somewhat backwards. because I like the smooth barge-like sound of the single exhaust so much ( it has a long, red Cherry can glasspack type of muffler), and I am thinking about putting an og 312 in the car and if I should keep the single exhaust.
In any case, I just love the firing order and sounds of the Y and flathead.

I had the exhaust routed like the 312 saving room for resonators in case I wanted to quieten the exhaust a bit. I have Borla stainless mufflers, 2 1/2"pipes and an X pipe crossover. Borla makes a resonator and you have me thinking about adding them just for a change.
