Thank you for clarification, that makes sense now. so our 57s would only keep the original yellow 56 plates if they were not registered post '63. It would be interesting to know if the black and gold 63 carried the same numbers/letters as the 56 plates ( if one kept his registraion valid, only with mandatory new plates). Say if the original owner of my 57 CS had the same CET 173 plates in yellow 56 and black 63 plates later on.
I'm not 100% sure but I assume the numbers could be the same but the serial numbers on the year stickers would be different. Law enforcement usually checks the sticker numbers match the plate number.

When the new plates were issued, they did not have the same set of characters as the new plate. The plates were sent out without regard to the plate it was replacing.

In California, they just kept reusing the same numbers and letters over and over.  They have had so many vehicle registrations, by the millions of vehicles, they ran out of number combinations.

You become aware of this when you try to find a unused plate number for the YOM (Year of Manufacture) DMV plate program.  I had some 1951 plates in my hand, and they said that the number was on a Toyota Truck, but it had not been registered in six years.  At the end of the seventh year, I returned with my pristine 1951 plates and had them registered to my 1955 Deluxe Barn Door bus.

The DMV has a lot of weird rules for the YOM program that make no sense.

Hemidave   #5432  WOW!  It's hard to believe that they used those dangerous bumper jacks in the old days.  That person also has it on the dirt.   I'm happy that in these days most of us just have them for decoration.

Jay, in regard to the bumper jacks, I'm sure most of us had a close call when we were young and bullet prof.  In about 64, my best friend and I were changing out a rear end in his 55 ford convert. and had it jacked up with 2 bumper jacks. It was a very hot afternoon and his mother said come into the house for a cool drink, so we did. when we came back outside the 55 was setting  on the ground.  Since that time when ever I have anything jacked up to work on I have blocks under it. There are some things we just don't forget.

Alvin   I had a very similar problem with my very first car a 51 Ford.  I was next to it  The car went sideways.  One jack went flying and hit me in the head.  I drove myself to Boston City Hospital for stitches and still have the scar to show it.  From then on it was always underneath jacks and lots of chock blocks.   Also think of all the beautiful bumpers that got damaged.   Jay
