Vintage drag racing from Vancouver Island in about 1970. If you fast forward to the 7 min. mark there is one partial pass and about 20 seconds later a full pass. Man that car must have been a handful!

Talk about a time warp! love it! Wish I had been around in those days of drag racing.
I think Gary Coe was from Washington state, but made the rounds to the division 6 tracks. It ran a 427 h/r with a 4-speed. With the altered wheelbase it really was a handful!
Great stuff!!!!
Maybe turning down those wheelie bars a bit more.
Wander what kind of Gs were pulled on the shut down hill?
Gasman826:
Probably a lot fewer than we do now that we have both 2 and 4-wheel disc brakes. lol

57 AGIN
Later on in the video there's a top fuel dragster and fuel funny car, at the time they hit maybe 200mph. The dragster may flex and bounce around a bit.
Today at well over 300mph the transition to the uphill shutoff would be disastrous.
Randy
7:33 has a few of Gunfighter popping wheelies too
I have heard a rumor that another Gunfighter is being built!
The backward facing Econoline pickup was a crack up :003:
Got to meet Gary at Indy (WFC) in 07.Enjoyed talking with him and seeing his trucks that were in the show.I think I made him feel old when I said I had a picture of his 57 on my wall as a kid.I was 52 at the time... :002:
Gary is a member here. He is building a new Gunfighter 57 for Hot Rod magazine Drag Week competition. Should be nearing completion.
That is awesome.........
Gary is from Portland Or. He owns the largest towing co in the metro area. He also has a 58 Ranchero with a 57 front end. A really nice guy. Very humble. I became very well acquainted with him when we drag raced in the 60's.

I am only 56 years old, so I didn`t get to see Gary Coes 57 Ford Gunfighter racing, but I was fortunate enough to watch the Coe & Larson Gunfighter Pro Stock Pinto wagon racing in the early 70s. And after a long absence from drag racing, he has been racing one of the new factory Cobra Jet Mustangs it Siock Eliminator.
He also has a beautiful 57 f-100 , Built by Steves restorations here in Portland.
I am still looking for my old race car from the 60's.
FORD COUNTRY
It was a poppy-red 1957.
I will try to add a picture.
I like that..that pic just went into my desktop wallpaper rotation. Awesome old race car. What was in it?

I may have seen that pickup at a goodguys show...awesome, so many subtle changes. If it was his, I sure didn't know who I was talking to when he gave me a "tour" of the build. I may have a pic of it in my old archives.
That sounds like Gary, he's always willing to talk cars. One of those guys that whoever he meets is treated as a new friend. Which is why he's successful in his business. Believe that 57 was featured in Street Rodder and its an incredible example of the sows ear changing into a silk purse.
Zap- :unitedstates:
James, Harry can tell you more, but Ford country had a high winding small block! Put a lot of bowties back on the trailer.

Randy, the Gunfighter was actually powered by a small block Ford, not a FE. Now, John Haskells shorty 57 Ford wagon DID have a FE. At the bremerton All Ford Drags in the early 80s, Haskell brought out his yellow and white wagon, and it had a single 4 barrel 427 Hi Hiser and Jerico 4 speed in it.I still have a photo of his wagon racing my old 428 4 speed 70 Mach 1 at that race.

tease!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Rory, is that you?
If I remember correctly wasn't that 57 wagon shortened about 3 feet?
Hi Randy, yeah, its me. As for Haskells 57 wagon, I think it was a 4 door with the rear doors removed, and the rear body moved foreward. So yes, likely about 2 1/2-3 feet shorter than stock. That weekend at Bremerton was the only time I ever saw the car.
