I'm ready to begin installing a sbf into the 57.  What do I need to do to use the 64 289 mounts?  Will adding slots between the already existing slots put the engine in the proper position?  I do plan to use a 3 spd 0/d transmission.

I didn't modify the slots.  Some rubber mounts may not fit so install the mounts loose and tighten after the engine is setting on them.  Depending on the oil pan, shims may be required between the mount and engine block to obtain pan to cross member clearance.

No extra slots needed.  As Gary said the clearance between the oil pan and the cross member may require spacers.  Leaving the bolts for the mount to block loose until the studs are in the slots makes it easier.  With the bolts tightened up you will need to "wiggle" the engine around to get both sides to slip in.  They will go, just a pain to "wiggle" 600lbs around!

My 351C took 3/4" spacers to get the pan off the cross member.  I was very uncomfortable with the clearance so I added a 3/16" spacer between the chassis and the motor mount.

Thanks. This may be easier than I thought.  I thought from other posts spacers would be required for clearance.  I have been fortunate lately perhaps I have an odd ball pan and won't need spacers.  I'm going out now to see if I can get the engine and trans in for a trial fit.   I'm planning to have it in and out several times.

If going aftermarket pan, a Milodon road race pan fits better than OEM with the pan to crossmember clearance.  Moroso is cheaper but poorer quality and fits no better than OEM.

It's been ten years ago when I did mine, what I used was mounts from Butches cool stuff, there good quality they bolt right in no wiggling or shimming, the motor sits right where it should. I'm running a 351W which is a little wider than a 289-302 and still had room for Hedman shorty headers with no issues, just another option to consider.

I used HEDMAN headers also...1st gen Mustang/Cougar/Fairlane.  I also installed 351W so I used the 351w conversion headers.

I was thinking about stock manifolds.  This is a 302, basically stock although well built.  The heads were surfaced and the block trued and an after market intake installed.  I know the guys at the machine shop so they completely assembled it for me.

Gary, I'm installing a 351w in my Ranchero, using the '64 Galaxie motor mounts, and headers are the next purchase. I'd like to look into the HEDMAN  headers you mentioned. Can you tell me more about "351w conversion headers".I do not recall hearing that description before. Any chance you have a part number? What do I need to know?
Thanks

I see what was meant about wrestling 600 pounds of engine but it sat down quite nicely, on the pan.  Tomorrow, I'll p/u some metal for spacers.  The stud on the bottom of the 64 mount fit easily in the lower hole of the mount bracket that was welded on at the factory.

Hedman offers somewhere around 20 different options to fit '64-73 Mustang with Windsor engines.  I bought the silver, ceramic coated, mid length for 351W swap.  The 351W is slightly wider and slightly taller than the 302.  The swap version fit tighter at the head to clear the upper control arm.  Since there is very little difference, I think 302 or 351 headers will fit.  I chose mid length because the car sat quite low and I didn't want to take a chance on the full length ones.  I really like ceramic coating for heat containment and rust control.  88656...pricey but good quality, coated, fit, and look good.  Same version available but not coated for half the money.  I did try installing the engine with the headers attached.  It would be too easy to scratch them.  I bolted the engine in and the headers slide easily into place.

Things happened yesterday and I didn't get the spacers made but I did p/u the metal. I planned to trial fit the engine/transmission so haven't attached the flywheel.  I decided to have it surfaced.  A good thing I did as it was wedge shaped and took over an hour grinding to true it.

Gary, did you install the headers with the sheet metal on the car? Thanks for the information!

In and out several times with all the sheet metal on...last time with the hood on!

Haha....Terry, you'll soon know why when I saw a plastic mock up 4.6 engine block at a swap meet, I jumped on it. That. and an emptied-out tranny case meant I could just pick up the assembly. Worked out perfectly. Once I got to the real thing, it was once-and-done.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe
