Interesting push buttons.  When I restored my Ranchero about 3 years ago the metal panels were attached by oval head machine screws with finish washers that screwed into a caged nut installed in the body holes.  My car was a barn find that had not been touched in 30 years when I found it in the San Fernando valley.  Oh, well.  It is also correct (my memory is not the best) that the wind lace is attached under a foldable metal strip.  When I made the cardboard panels I made them large enough so that the edge of the panel would slide underneath the foldable metal strip.  The upholstery shop both stapled the wind lace to the cardboard and also attached it under the foldable metal strip.  All this was covered by the metal panels.

Looks like the button clips that hold the cardboard in place in the trunk of a retractable

In my opinion, Dgasman hit the nail right on the head.  I no longer have my Ranchero, but those are exactly the same clips that hold the back side panels on my car.
I can't believe that Ford would have made two different types of clips for a 57 Fords.   FWIW.   Every original one of those clips that I have ever seen is BROWN
When you order new ones , they also come painted BROWN.
