 High Energy Ignition.  It was originally a G.M. name, Delco I guess.

Yes, its a GM type coil-distributor combination unit.
the coil is actually mounted on the distributor cap.
there are a lot of aftermarket pieces for these distributors, they are even available to fit some Ford engines. A company named D.U.I. makes a very good unit.
