1st,  forget about corrected my spelling,  better people have tried.     i went to get some eng paint for the 57,  right now its some kinda orange,  i don't know if its orig or not,   need some info,  anyone have a code or color i can use?,  2nd,   i talked before about a resperator,  since then i have found out that at painters supply they have a $19.95 resperator, keeep in a plastic bag when done, has something to do with the charcoal,  there only good for 40 hours   i've used it twice and have had no problems,  but have found out that using a torpedo isn't very good with sinus,   so when done with a old resperator that causes problems,  throw it away,  canisters cost more then the resperator i've talked about.  just my 2 cents,  but i do need to know about the paint, have found out its red,  but any special red, #'s, anything,  thanks    jerry

Jerry, the y-block color is called t-bird red. It looks similar to chevy orange, but leans toward red. I used a product from KBS coatings called motor coater. It's a brush on product, but after a couple heat cycles with the engine it flows out nicely. It was a good choice as my car was freshly painted, I didn't want the mess and tape off with over spray.  Mark

Rangoon Red from a mid-sixties Ford truck can be mixed in a can by any auto paint store and it looks great and is really durable when sprayed as a arcylic enamal with hardner or as a urethane single stage.  I will have to go look at the can to get the actual paint code, but any paint store should be able to look it up.

The Rangoon Ford Red  used on a Y-Block is actually a cleaner brighter looking orange/red than anything you can get out of a spray can.  A catylized paint will always outlast the aerosols as once it is hardened it is more ressitent to rewetting when exposed to solvents, fuels, and cleaners.  Also a mixed paint can be easily matched latter if needed.

It does cost more and takes more effort to use a quality mixed paint, but we need to be proud of our Y-blocks and give them the best appearance they can have.

The disposable Carbon Filter Respirators you are using work well, as long as there is some fresh air in the room.

You are right that when they get old you need to dispose and buy a new one.  They actually are working once they are out of the bag.  You can increase their life by keeping them in a large(1-2gallon) ziplock bag.

AN EXAMPLE HOW ACTIVATED CHARCOAL WORKS:

The repirstor uses charcoal to absorb the isocyanates(bad for people).   Your homea Barbecue Grill uses similar charcoal.

One the 4th of July you buy a new bag of , It easily lites and burns.  You have half a bag left.  You put it in garage.  Labor Day comes around and you want to use your partial bag of charcoal.  Now it won't light, no matter how much fluid you pour on it.  What happened to it?  It absorbed moisture while in storage, just like your respirator carbon/charcoal does when it is out of the bag or being used.

A charcoal cartridge is just like a sponge.  When it gets satuarated it can't absorb anymore.  When your cartridge is saturated it can no longer absorb the isocyanates( again, bad for people, orderless and tasteless) and it lets them pass through.

If you do not know if your respirator is "fresh".  Throw it away and buy a new one.  They are much cheaper than a hospital visit.

The proper respirator for most Automtive Paints are 3M #7192(med) or 3M #7193(large).
