Was snooping around the Autoclassic website... looking at the fuel tanks.... what is the difference  in the tanks from the price point?
Am I missing something?

Jeff, The $139.00 is the same tank Ford would have given you. I just put on in my Sunliner, just had to bend the neck a little. Tom

I did not know what Ni-terne is either..but a little research indicates it as a lead-tin coating with nickel... for a bit more of corrosion protection.

The tank I got from a more or less local 57 guy was about $250, nice tank, made in Canada eh. Another 50-60 for the sender.

Guys on the E85 forum were discussing the use of a sealing product to line their tanks for E85.

This what I found about Ni-Terne

U.S. Steel's "Ni-Terne" material. The annealed cold-rolled steel sheet is first processed to apply a thin flash coating of electrodeposited nickel, and then it's given a hot-dip lead-tin alloy coating. The nickel base coat gives Ni-Terne steel an extra measure of corrosion resistance compared to U.S. Steel's regular "Terne" steel sheet and also compared to traditional galvanizing, which isn't readily available anymore. It should also be pointed out that the Ni-Terne coating protects both interior and exterior surfaces of the fuel tank from surface corrosion.

Before you order, is an OEM '57 tank going to be compatible with your 4.6 conversion.  The 4.6 is looking for a pump in the tank and a return line.  Another issue when switching from mechanical fuel pump/carburetor to closed system, higher pressure EFI is the tank needs baffling or a sump to insure sloshing fuel does not uncover the pickup tube and send an air bubble to the injectors.  Injectors are not going to like air bubbles.

That was the main reason I hadn't ordered one yet. I believe when Claborn did hid conversion in the wagon, he used the oem '57 tank with an outside pump. He had some initial problems with it, but one of his last posts was his fix for it. For sure not the best way to go..but may get me by until I can afford an all out custom tank...I'm in no hurry to order one, I just may wait until I can figure the best route to go that I can afford. One of the things I needed to look into anyways is the weldability of that nickel coated tank. I do not want a trunk mounted gas tank, that much is for sure. I'm wondering if these tanks are made here in the U.S. I know there is a Canadian manufacturer of a '57 tank. If it need the baffles as you stated, I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to look into procuring a gas tank "kit" form a North America mfg. co., that would be the two halves and the neck not welded together. It seems like that would be a simpler solution to getting a start on a tank that fits as oem without spending a small fortune on a custom one.

An external pump does have its limits and a custom tank is very pricey (I know) a real good option is the new aeromotive phantom system http://www.summitracing.com/parts/aei-18688/overview/
I wish they had this kit when I had my wagons tank made .

Saw that system installed in one of the magazines I get or one of the TV shows (old timers struck, don't remember which), very simple but you do need a flat spot on the tank top.

When I did my 66 Falcon Ranchero I put a well in the bottom of the tank to make room for the stock Mustang pump assembly and the stampnigs in the Mustang tank almost lined up perfect for the mounting flang on the top side.  Turns out the thing worked out perfect as it was free and I had/have more time then money!

That summit pump looks like a nice setup. I would think the '57 passenger car tank would be an appropriate use for that system. Once again..the sticker shock..550. bucks. But, gotta be a whole lot less than a custom tank. 200 for new tank,550 for pump=750.
DGASMAN...that's a great looking unit. What kind of money are we talking for a custom tank setup like that?
This is definetly looking like a subject for alot of research...tank manufacturers, kits, using oem components to get what you need as Bill did with his Falcon.
It would be great to get everyone's input on this that has done this. Particularly, for me and others working on the 4.6 swap, with a passenger car tank.
