Brake pedal does not return to its position

After getting all the brake work done my brake pedal does not return to its position. I am able to stop the car but the brake power is very sketchy.  I'm literally applying maximum foot force to stop the car.  Can someone help shed some light on this problem.

I have power brakes.  I have upgraded or addressed repairing the brake pedal system that's located on the inside of the firewall yet because I don't know where to start.

I assume that like newer systems there is a one way check valve for manifold vacuum.  Ain't in backwards?

Could you explain your thoughts about the check valve being backwards?  Which part specifically are talking about.  And is it really as simple as being on backwards? 

I hope the solution is really that easy.

After reading that you were 'applying maximum foot force to stop the car' it made me wonder if you were getting vacuum to the booster.
Some systems have a separate one way valve that is inserted in the vacuum line to the booster.

Others have a check valve that couldn't be put in a line backwards. Plugs right into the booster like the one shown in the 2nd pic here.  ....

Now after seeing a small crappy drawing of the '57's booster system's internal parts I don't think it would apply to your power brake booster since it is way different than most that came later.  Not clear if your check valve could be installed backwards & I have no experience with that '57 power brake system. 
Don't know if you even had the booster apart to where something may have got put back together wrong.

Sorry, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it.  I knew that they were a bellows type deal under the dash but don't know where the check valve lives.  Wish I could find that pic again.

The check valve lives on the tank under the drivers fender.  It screws into the tank and is fed from the intake manifold.

Do you have the correct year SHOP MANUAL? A fully descriptive diagnostic routine will be found there.
