I cannot believe the speedometer drive gear and clip came off the speedometer cable!!!!

Speedometer cable somehow rested on the exhaust and burned to the point of making the cable not turn. When I went to change the cable, the gear did not come off with it.

C-4 tranny...the gear and clip are in the tail housing somewhere.

Do I take off the tail housing and retrieve or not worry about it?

F-in pissed.

I would not leave the pieces in there.  It's not that big a job.   I had to take my tail shaft off in place a few weeks ago to to  replace the speedometer drive gear on the output shaft and retrieve the steel ball that helped lock it in place.
It was more work jacking the car up and blocking it than doing the actual job.
The transmission cross member did not have to come off.

Get it out of there. Go ahead and change the fluid and filter while your laying on your back, or maybe you are lucky enough to have a lift. Check your gear on the output shaft for damage, although not likely.

No way id leave it in there!
