Update on my fuel tank

On 06/02/14 I called Auto City Classic, Inc and ordered a fuel tank for my 57 custom.   They got it out on the same day and it arrived on 06/06 today. That was fast. Unfortunately someone shipped one for a 59 Ford and the filler neck is too long by about 5".   I called ACC and told them the problem.  They asked for the part number of the one that was shipped and I gave it to them  and they said "That's for a 59 and someone goofed".  They were very nice and stated that they would ship the correct one today and there was absolutely no hassle.  They also stated that they would send Fed Ex to pick up the incorrect one sometime next week.
They were very helpful and apologetic and did not want to see pictures of the tanks.
This is a good company to do business with .
Hopefully I'll be driving my car next week.  Jay

They were at the Jefferson ,Wisconsin spring swap meet. I was impressed with all the tanks, radiators, and chassis stuff they had on display, I didn't stay long, but the conversations I heard going on were very positive.    Mark

They are good people.  They don't screw around and make excuses and they ship fast.
  The tank looks real nice.

Ok..now I'm at that point, so of course I've gotta have questions. I was following Jay's advise of test fitting the tank before I went for the final install in case the filler neck had to be adjusted to end up centered in the hole. Jay said his did, and Jeff had friends with the same issue. but it moved quite easily. I've got mine up in place with a 2 x4 on a floor jack..I don't have the straps on yet, but I got to wondering if there is suppose to be a padding of some sort between the tank and the trunk floor, and additionally it looks like the tank nestles between the long crossbar with the strap slots and the 2 L-bolt brackets, so I'm wondering about a padding there also.
If there is any padding that is suppose to be there it would obviously affect the centering of the filler neck. Also I'm wondering if the filler neck is on location close enough to pass thru the hole if it could be adjusted afterwards.
What about the rubber filler neck grommet? When does that go on?

The tank should have some type of tar paper on top to prevent rubbing on the body if there is any vibration.

Use a Dynamat, 3M Sound Deadning pads #8840, or Q-Pads on top of the tank before installing.   I also put a strip of the adhesive sound deadning pads on the straps where they contact the tank as well.

You may need an additional ground from the tank to body to allow the sender to read if the tank comes out really well insulated and you are using hose between the metal ine and the tank.

I folded the RH & LH flanges of the tank up with a duck billed vice grips and some hamering to fold the side flanges of the new tank upward to give more room for the rear exhaust pipes and the leaf springs while I have the tank out as well.  More clearance is always good.

Thanks Pat. I vaguely remember seeing some remnants of a type of a coarse fabric(burlap like) when I took out my old tank too many moons ago. I do have 2 layers of rubberized undercoating under the paint on the underside, was thinking that may be enough as it is. It sure wouldn't hurt for a layer of the dynamat stuff (I know we both use roofing ice barrier)....good idea.
I had already planned on running a ground wire from the fuel sender to my rear grounding strip...nothing on my car so far is dependent on ground-to-body. There are provisions for a grounding lug on my in-tank fuel pump as well.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

You should tweak the neck before putting it through the back body hole.

While I had mine loosely in place with blocks of wood, I stuck pieces of paint stirring sticks between the neck and back hole to fine tune the centering.  After it was centered  to my satisfaction, I tightened the straps.

FWIW  My tank held 19.6 gallons.

Jeff give me a call.   I'm checking on your travel to Mass. schedule.    Jay
