Gas Guage not reading right

When I fill my tank the gas gauge only shows 1/4 full when the gauge shows empty it still has about 10 gal in it.  What is the problem, is it the sender or the gauge?  What do the experts say?  Thanks in advance.

take the wire off the sender and ground it.turn the key on and the fuel gauge should go to full.if it does the sender is no good.

You've got a new tank, correct? Does the sending unit look like the old one, or also replaced? Sending units reading incorrectly seem to be  a frequent topic lately, and I seem to recall some of the Ranchero owners discussing the fact the a sending unit for them was not available...I may be wrong on that.

New Tank old sender that seemed to work when it was bench tested (it was checked with a ohm meter, I did not check it the previous owner did so Ido not know what the reading were).  I will keep looking into this.  I will put in a auto meter under the dash if I have to.

make sure you have a good ground from the tank to the body
