I just bought a custom battery cable... 1/0 red wire, lug x lug. Ordered it day before yesterday and it arrived today. Excellent quality, incredible service, reasonable price.

Is 1/0 the real thick stuff like welding cable ?   Do  you have to solder the ends onto them yourself?
Thanks Jay

I got my 1/0's from Ron Francis. about 100 bucks for a 6 ft. set. The battery ends were attached, but the lug ends have to be soldered on after trimming to exact length wanted. What makes some 1/0's better than others is the number of strands used to make up that 1/0 diameter/volume. More strands of smaller dia. is better. Why is that important?.....a surprising electrical fact I learned a few years ago when I rewired my house: electricity does not travel THROUGH wire, it travels ON it. I always wondered why they talked about not scratching up a solid wire (household stuff) when you twisted them together or formed a loop. It's because the electricity creates heat when it jumps that gap created by the scratch!!
From what I learned, 2/0's are generally adequate, but 1/0's are better. Not sure why anyone would need anything heavier, but I have seen 0, 00, 000 (?) etc. Probably earth-mover stuff.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

I used the 1/0 welding cable for my trunk mount battery. The best addition I made for my starting system was replacing the original starter with a gear reduction unit. Cheap $50 one from eBay
cranks over my big block effortlessly where as the stock one struggled noticeably with the engine hot.

Welding cable and hardware store bought lugs soldered in has worked well for me. Use it also for extra ground strap from engine to frame.

This guy does all of the assembly, custom lengths, whatever wire gage, ends, color, heat shrink tubing.... I paid $40 including shipping for a 40" cable.
