Odometer runs backwards!

I finally got my sedan delivery on the road and am fixing some of the little problems.  Today I discovered the odometer is running backwards.   The speedometer (and odometer) were rebuilt as part of the restoration by a qualified shop.  The speedometer seems to function just fine, and it's just the odometer that is acting strange.   This means the cable itself and plastic gear in the transmission (both new) must also be functioning as they  should.  Anybody have a clue as to what could be going on?
I am ready for all the Ferris Bueller and Back to the Future Comments, but something beyond that would be helpful.

At a guess I would say they have got a gear inside the odometer incorrectly mounted. I think the only option is to go back to whoever rebuilt it and get them to put it right.
