Hi, ... I need help to find a source for a tail gate lock. My 57 came only with one worn out key and I want to change all locks. There are plenty of sources offering door lock and ignition lock sets. There also sets which include the trunk lock, but no word of that lock would also fit for the tail gate of the wagon. Anyone who can help ?

Thanx.

I think Guenther (from Austria) just went thru this on his Del Rio project and can answer that question. I'll send him a pm to make sure he sees your post.
Welcome to the forum, BTW.

My buddy Jim is trying to remove the pax side door lock and ran into this problem (quoting from his e-mail):

The fork which locks/holds in the assembly looks somewhat like the vette.  As I recall on the vette the open end of that fork pointed rearward so you can pull it forward and release the assembly. On the Ford with the open end of the fork (retaining mechanism) is pointing forward & there?s not enough room to push/pull the mechanism rearward and release the lock assembly. I think it?s in backwards.

Anyone who can help with this ?

Thanx !

Easy one, Kai and Jim. As mentioned before the retaining clip comes in from outside the door frame. it is hidden under the door rubber seal. Just pry the rubber seal away a few inches ( most probably glue will have to be removed) and you will find the end pronge of the retainer clip locked in the door frame. Wedge a blade or wide screwdriver in there and it will release the clip and it can be pulled out to the rear of car. lock will need a little wiggling and moving around until the claw finally comes out the small hole. On reassemble take care that the claw goes into the proper holes on the latch. needs a little fiddling. should be no problem.

if you should ever need to remove the actual tailgate lock it is secured by a nut from the inside. you would have to remove the inner panel.

Yep....what Guenter said x2. Yours is not in backwards. Everything looks to be in great shape. Those 2 pronged levers that fit into the back of the cylinder frequently are broken, yours obviously are not.

The clip does not have to be completely removed from the door.  Just pull it out enough to release the lock.

Thank you very much. This sounds like a simple job. Now I hope that a key made for that lock fits all the others (i.e. driver side and tail gate) and no one has changed locks on the other positions.

... off to figure out what I can ask next ... stay tuned ...

Problem solved. Got the number from the PAX side cylinder, my buddy Jim had three keys made and also three copies of my worn ignition key. All fit well and we paid under $30 for everything. Cool.

Thank you, Guenter !!!

Perfect  :001: ! You're welcome.
Good to see the og matching locks saved instead of getting replaced with possibly minor quality reproductions.
