Jeff FWIW I drove mine for a few years with a Wilwood front setup (fixed 4 piston calipers) and a '67 Galaxie disc/drum manual dual MC. The car stopped but the pedal effort never inspired braking confidence. In the absence of space and vacuum I finally installed a Hydro-Boost set up and now the car feels like it can stop on a par with anything.

Yes. Lynn... you are very correct(and Rich too)
I have spoken to friends that have told me the exact same experience. I will look into the Hydro-Boost system.
No use in spending good money just to start all over(in my case anyways)

My fear is not so much on my ability to stop the car,. it's the KIA driving soccer mom that decides to hang right doing 60 with no indication.Anyhow. you all know the reasons.

Thank you!,,,, and everyone!

Ford Blue blood

Jeff, just a little tail of brakes.  My 62 Bird was drum/drum.  Worked well, even stopped fine when I encountered a wreck on the interstate, stopped fine and in plenty of time.  I was happy with how everything worked until....going to an event we were coming down from the top of Straight Mountain (large hill here in B-Ham area) and the brake pedal kept getting harder and harder. I got to the point where I was on the edge of "am I going to come off this hill wrinkle free?"  I had contemplated disc but decided the extra-large drums would be fine.  Started looking for a kit, car went to a tooth fairy in Pensacola, FL before I could start the conversion.  I have put disc on everything since then.  The 61 Comet is next!

Scare bird had a nice disc brake kit that was a bolt-on for a stock 57 spindle. I think it used Ranger rotors and calipers? I used late 60's Fairlane / Torino spindles and all the rest of the  disc setup. Only thing I had to do was ream the bottom ball joint as the 57 is a larger diameter, pretty much a straight bolt-on. I never found the need for power brakes either, it stops pretty good from 120 mph for a 3600 lbs. car.

to rmK57,  did you change the MC also?

rmk57

I had a Granada manual disc / drum until recently. Swapped over to a 1986-1990 Ranger. The Ranger master is a direct bolt-in.

not to argue,  but to 1957 I thought orig was 14", when I had my first 57 back in 1959 I remember changing whls to 15",  using plymouth whls

rmk57

Correct, originally 1957 Fords did come with 14's and I believe was the first year for that.

thankls for the info,  so,, any one else offer the same thing for disk brakes?   I know others like Summit,  but that might specialize in just disk brakes?

RICH MUISE

Hey Gerald. I got my front disc brakes from Drop n' Stop, also no longer in business. I did get my rear discs from either Summit or Jegs, and they were made by SS brakes inc. They use an '88 T-Bird caliper/ rotor. The front kit from Drop n Stop used a '86(?) Granada spindle for a dropped stance, and the accompanying rotor and caliper. Like Lynn, and others, I used a hydroboost booster. Ugly, but great system. Mine came from an '02 Mustang Cobra.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe
